You know those days that seem to drag on and on and on….
and then you realise there is still tea to be made, baths/books/pjs to be done, and you are already zapped and don’t know where you will find one more iota of energy to make it through….
Yep, today, that was me. Serious case of the “can’t be
fu…. bothereds”. And you know what? That’s ok. It happens. It especially happens when you are trying to juggle all that comes with raising a family.
I can’t change that the baby is teething, the older two are sick, that I’m grainy-eyed from tiredness, or that soon the children need to have a meal (again?! Really?! 😉)
What I can change? My response to it. I can choose to yell and fight and stew or I can choose to breathe.
And make the best of it.
Snuggle the baby who is already growing so fast and soon enough will be past being held. Plan a meal that is easy to make one handed, but will still nourish and boost the immunity of the sick ones. Remember to restock the freezer with meals for days like this 😉
… Because this moment, this day will pass. Tomorrow may be the same, or worse, or better. But it’s ok. It’s ok. I will do the best I can with what I have available today, and tomorrow I will try to do a little better.
As a mum to three kids aged five and under, my life is the epitome of crazy/beautiful. Every day I strive to make the best choices for our family, but sometimes that is easier said than done.
Would I like to buy all organic fruit and vegetables? Absolutely. But if it isn’t available through our local organic co-op, then I need to be content with the choices available to me in our regional area. Choosing other fresh fruit and veg is still a better option than none at all. Life is relative, isn’t it?
So, what’s my point?
Well, honestly, as you get to know me, you will see there often might not be a point at all 😂 – I do tend to ramble!
But today I was thinking about lemon slice. One of my total addictions in my pre-coeliac days, complete with biscuits, condensed milk, etc. Can anyone say refined sugar, chemical s**t-storm?!
But luckily, for every recipe I used to love, there is a very clever person out there somewhere who has made a cleaner version. So now if I want a sweet treat, I don’t beat myself up, I try to make a better choice. (And for those of you wondering, this is my go to lemon slice option thanks to Wholefood Simply.)
We can’t always be perfect, but we can make better choices.
One coconut is much the same as another…. isn’t it? Well, not once it has been processed and packaged.
Check the packaging of your standard shop bought dessicated coconut and you will discover preservative 220 lurking there. This sulphate is a known allergen, particularly for asthmatics (see here for more info).
Check your tin of coconut milk or cream and (putting aside for a moment the potential presence of BPA in the can’s lining) you are likely to find thickeners and stabilisers. So, why not buy our dessicated coconut – which contains only coconut – and make your own coconut milk using a food processor, filtered water, and a straining cloth (method here – but ssshhh, I don’t even presoak my coconut 😉 – I just use warm water and whizz away!).
Don’t assume any product is as clean as you might think. Check the labels on everything and, one baby step at a time, it will become easier to make better choices.
